Orange Marmalade Breakfast Bake

This breakfast literally tastes like a sunrise. Orange Marmalade Breakfast Bake has bright citrus sweetness sandwiched between the golden butteriness of french bread. For the bake: • 3 tablespoons butter, softened • 24 slices french bread, 1/2-inch thick • 1 (12-ounce) jar orange marmalade • 6 large eggs • 2 3/4 cups milk, not skim • 1/3 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/3 cup walnuts, finely chopped For the syrup: • 1 1/4 cups maple syrup • 1/3 cup orange juice • 2 teaspoons orange zest, grated


Step 1

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2

Spread the butter over one side of each slice of the french bread.

Step 3

Place half of the bread slices into the baking dish, buttered side down.

Step 4

Spread the marmalade over the top of the bread slices in the baking dish.

Step 5

Place the other half of the bread slices on top of the marmalade, buttered side up.

Step 6

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg until fully blended.

Pour the egg mixture over the bread.

Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, if not overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Remove the casserole from the fridge and uncover.

Sprinkle the bread with walnuts.

Bake until the bread is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40-50 minutes.

Remove the bake from the oven and let it stand for 5-10 minutes.

In a small saucepan over medium heat on the stove-top, combine the maple syrup, orange juice, and zest.
